Uncompahgre Peak quick facts:
- Summit: 14,321 feet.
- Uncompahgre Peak is the highest mountain in the San Juan range.
- The first non-Native American to view the peak was by Lieutenant E.G. Beckwith in 1853. He gave the mountain its name but the source of the name is not entirely clear. It is possibly a combination of the Ute words "unca," "pa," and "gre." This translates to "hot water spring." It is also possible that the word is a distortion of the Ute word "ancapogari" which means "red lake." Both names could refer to the hot springs in the area.
- In 1873 a second explorer sighted the peak and, not knowing that it had already been named, called it Mt. Chavenet in honor of an astronomy professor.
- The peak was also referred to as "the Leaning Tower" and "Capitol Mountain" by local miners.
