Mount Elbert quick facts:
  • Mount Elbert is located in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains and is the highest mountain in Colorado.
  • Summit: 14,440 feet.
  • Mount Elbert was named by miners after territorial governor, Samuel Elbert, who brokered a treaty with Ute tribes opening the area for mining.
  • The first climber to reach the summit was H. W. Stuckle in 1874. Stuckle was part of the Hayden survey team.
  • In spite of its height, Mount Elbert is a relatively easy climb. The two main trails are both relatively short compared to other mountains' trails and the incline is gradual.
  • From the top of Mount Elbert you can sometimes pick up radio signals from other states.
